BAE Systems has unveiled a new artillery system designed to destroy drones, cruise missiles, and other aerial threats using high-speed guided projectiles.

According to the website Defence Blog, the system, called Multi-Domain Artillery Cannon System (MDACS), uses a 155 mm cannon equipped with Hypervelocity Projectile (HVP) ammunition. The idea is to transform traditional artillery pieces into a lower-cost air defense alternative.

The company stated that the system was developed to deal with saturation attacks involving large numbers of drones and guided munitions, a scenario that has become increasingly prominent in recent conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and clashes in the Middle East.

MDACS is expected to operate integrated with multifunction radars and automated battle management systems. The concept includes eight cannons, four radars, two command centers, and at least 144 hypervelocity projectiles.

According to information released by the U.S. Army, the system is still under development, but a fully operational prototype is expected to be unveiled by 2027, with demonstrations planned for 2028.
