The Ecuadorian Navy has officially incorporated the BAE Jambelí (MP-56), currently considered the largest and most advanced ship in the country’s fleet.

The vessel, which previously served with the South Korean Coast Guard as KCG-3001, arrived in Ecuador after a 62-day ocean crossing that began in January 2026. The ship belongs to the Tae Pyung Yang class, known for its ability to operate on long-duration maritime patrol missions and in adverse sea conditions.

Built to naval standards and measuring more than 100 metres in length, the BAE Jambelí was designed for ocean surveillance, search and rescue missions, as well as the protection of the exclusive economic zone. The vessel has an endurance of up to 40 days at sea, the ability to operate helicopters and carry fast interception boats, significantly expanding the operational reach of the Ecuadorian Navy.

Before the transfer, the ship underwent modernisation work in South Korea and received adaptations to meet Ecuador’s needs. During its South Korean service, the vessel used SEA VULCAN 20 mm automatic weapon systems, which were removed before delivery. In Ecuadorian service, the patrol ship will operate mainly in maritime security missions, anti-drug trafficking operations and the protection of the natural resources of the Galápagos Islands.

The incorporation of the BAE Jambelí also strengthens ties between Ecuador and South Korea in the defence sector. The transfer of the ship is seen as part of South Korea’s strategy to expand its presence in the international naval export market and could pave the way for future cooperation involving offshore patrol vessels, surveillance systems and modernisation programmes for the Ecuadorian fleet.
