The Austrian Ministry of Defense announced today the acquisition of 12 combat training aircraft Leonardo M-346FA for the Federal Armed Forces.

The decision was made after the last-minute acceptance of a cooperation offer with the Italian Air Force, which was about to expire at the end of the year. The contract is estimated to be worth approximately 1 billion euros and includes not only the aircraft but also training, spare parts, infrastructure investments, and logistics. The details of the agreement are still under negotiation.

Strengthening Austrian Air Defense

Defense Minister Claudia Tanner commented on the acquisition:
“With the acquisition of these aircraft, we are addressing a significant gap in the capabilities of our Air Force. This move not only brings pilot training back to Austria but also significantly strengthens air defense. It enhances the protection of Austria, its population, and its neutrality against aerial threats.”

Modern Combat Aircraft

The “FA – Fighter Attack” modification of the M-346 combines pilot training capabilities with the characteristics of a light fighter aircraft. Equipped with the Grifo-M346 radar, the aircraft is designed for both air-to-air combat and ground target attacks.

Planned Replacement of Retired Aircraft

The new aircraft will replace the Saab 105 OE, retired in 2020 after 50 years of service. Discussions about replacing the Saab 105 aircraft have been ongoing in Austria for 14 years. The new M-346 will be based at Vogler Air Base in Linz-Hörsching, enhancing the country’s air capabilities.
