Audi unveils the GT50 concept, which looks like it came straight out of a video game

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Audi’s I5 engines, apprentices from the German automaker developed the GT50, a concept that blends futuristic and retro styling into a single car.

As reported by the German newspaper Heilbronner Stimme, 14 Audi apprentices were responsible for transforming a turbo five-cylinder RS3 into a vehicle that resembles one of Audi’s IMSA race cars from the 1980s.

The construction process of the GT50 took six weeks. It is worth noting that the concept features the actual roof from an Audi 80, along with several other details clearly inspired by the manufacturer’s racing cars.

Despite looking like a car straight out of a video game, it would likely perform comfortably on the track. Under the hood, the GT50 is equipped with Audi RS3 racing hardware, delivering 395 horsepower.

While many automakers develop concepts merely to showcase what they are capable of, Audi’s concepts can actually end up becoming reality—or at the very least, set the direction future launches may take.

The RS6 GTO concept, for example, made it to production as the RS6 GT. While the GT50 may be too wild to be produced exactly as it is, it’s not unreasonable to imagine Audi bringing it to life as a retro-inspired variant of the RS3.
