Audi has decided to abandon the naming strategy introduced two years ago, which distinguished electric and combustion vehicles by even and odd numbers, respectively.
Instead, the brand will continue to use the suffix “e-tron” for electric vehicles and the acronym TFSI for gasoline models. The first sign of this change will be the next A6, which will keep its original name, instead of being renamed A7 as previously planned.
The decision to reverse course was driven by feedback from customers and dealers, who found the new convention confusing. The 2025 A5, for example, will replace the A4 as the compact sedan but will keep the A5 name, which might cause confusion. Audi confirmed that there will be no retroactive changes to models already released, but the company will continue adjusting its naming conventions for new vehicles.
With the new approach, numbers will return to indicating the relative size of the cars in Audi’s lineup, with no distinction between combustion and electrification. In Europe, diesel models will continue to use the TDI acronym.
It is not yet clear how this change will affect the brand’s upcoming releases, but the new A6 will be officially presented on March 4.
