Armenia’s Ministry of Defence showcased newly acquired Indian-made air defense and artillery systems during an official demonstration last Saturday (7).
According to a report by the Ukrainian outlet Militarnyi, the display included Akash-1S medium-range surface-to-air missile systems, Pinaka multiple launch rocket systems, and 155 mm artillery platforms.
The Indian-made systems were delivered as part of Yerevan’s recent diversification of arms suppliers. The Akash-1S, in particular, was presented by the Ministry of Defence as a central element of Armenia’s strengthened air defense layer.
The system is designed to protect military units and strategic facilities and is capable of engaging aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles at distances of up to 30 kilometers.
In the field of artillery, Armenian forces also demonstrated the Pinaka multiple launch rocket system. It uses standardized launch modules and can fire guided and unguided rockets, with a maximum range of up to 75 kilometers, depending on the type of ammunition.
The demonstration also included the 155 mm towed Trajan howitzer, notable for its integrated auxiliary power unit. This feature allows the weapon to reposition over short distances without the need for a towing vehicle or manual effort by the crew.
Alongside the Trajan, Armenia also displayed the MArG 155 self-propelled artillery system, a lightweight and mobile howitzer developed by India’s Bharat Forge.
According to defense analyst Leonid Nersisyan, cooperation with India and France has helped reduce Armenia’s dependence on Russian defense systems. Following the arms supplier diversification strategy, the Russian weapons arsenal in Armenia has already been “completely replaced,” Nersisyan told Defence Blog.
