The announcement was made by the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, who, however, kept the specific details about the quantity, cost, or delivery schedule of the missiles under wraps.

This acquisition is part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize the Albanian armed forces and was announced alongside Lockheed Martin’s announcement of two contracts with the US Army, totaling $309 million, for the production of Javelin missiles. These contracts, funded by the recent Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act, cover orders for more than 1,300 missiles intended for various international customers, including Norway, Latvia, Thailand, and now, Albania.

Known worldwide for its effectiveness, the Javelin is a guided anti-tank missile system in use by several countries, including Australia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. With an impressive attack range of 2,500 to 4,750 meters, the Javelin weighs 11.8 kg, is 1.08 meters long, and has a diameter of 126 mm. Operated by a two-person team, this weapon system is equipped with advanced technology, including a passive target acquisition and fire control system, which allows for precise location and aiming of enemies under any light condition.

The Javelin’s warhead, with its tandem-charge design, is specially designed to penetrate the most robust armor, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most formidable weapons in anti-tank combat. The missile, along with its launch post weighing approximately 6.4 kg, offers mobility combined with devastating power.

Amid these developments, Minister Peleshi emphasized that “there is no specific threat” and assured that, as a NATO member, Albania’s national security concerns are properly addressed. He also reiterated the country’s support for NATO’s open-door policy towards new members, such as Finland and Sweden, while highlighting the alliance’s peaceful stance towards all nations, including Russia.
