Airbus has completed the first prototype of the SIRTAP tactical drone, developed and produced entirely in Spain, and has already started the preparation phase for ground testing.
The schedule foresees evaluations throughout 2026, including experimental flights, with the first delivery scheduled for 2027. The system is part of a contract signed in 2023, which plans the acquisition of nine sets by Spain, each consisting of three aircraft and a ground control station.
The SIRTAP is classified as a high-end system in the tactical unmanned aircraft segment. Designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, the drone has an autonomy of over 20 hours, can reach altitudes above 20,000 feet, and operate in adverse weather conditions. It will be certified to fly in segregated airspace by the Spanish military authorities.
Among its key equipment are an electro-optical/infrared turret and a multi-mission maritime surveillance radar. The drone will also be able to carry guided weapons on four points under the wings, enhancing naval protection capabilities and complementing piloted aircraft. Additionally, it will feature electronic warfare systems, such as signal intelligence sensors, communications, and electronics.
The program aims not only to strengthen the tactical capabilities of the Spanish Armed Forces but also to boost the national defense industry and open up opportunities for future exports. Airbus is also studying the integration of the SIRTAP with the Juan Carlos I amphibious assault ship, in partnership with Navantia, which could expand the system’s use in naval operations.
According to the company, the development will contribute to strengthening Spain’s sovereignty in the aerospace sector and consolidating a European defense ecosystem.
