Airbus reveals futuristic cockpit with augmented reality and voice commands for next-generation fighter jets (X @AirbusDefence)
Airbus Defence and Space has unveiled a preview of the cockpit that could equip sixth-generation European fighter jets starting in 2035.
The project is part of the EPIIC initiative, funded by the European Defence Fund, and aims to transform the interaction between the pilot and the aircraft during high-complexity missions, focusing on advanced technologies and user experience.
The new cockpit adopts a minimalist design, moving away from traditional panels full of buttons and instruments. Instead, it features a digital environment with augmented reality, voice and gesture commands, sensors tracking the pilot’s gaze, and a personalized data display.
Despite the innovation, traditional elements like the control stick and throttle levers have been kept, now with enhanced functions such as haptic feedback, ensuring familiarity and continuous control during flight.
Airbus’s goal is to make interaction more intuitive and efficient, allowing simple tasks to be performed with natural commands. Additionally, the cockpit will be modular and upgradable, ready to adapt to new missions and technologies.
Ground tests have already begun, and the aim is to position Europe as a reference in future military aviation, with pilots at the center of a digital and intelligent system.
