Airbus is transforming its A400M Atlas military transport aircraft to function as an airborne drone launch platform.
The innovation was unveiled during the Paris Air Show, where the company presented ideas to expand the aircraft’s capabilities in military scenarios.
With the modifications, the A400M will be able to launch up to 50 small drones or 12 larger models in a single mission, in addition to functioning as a control center for unmanned aerial vehicle operations. Airbus emphasized that drones are increasingly essential in joint missions with manned aircraft.
This initiative has already reached a key milestone: at the end of 2022, in partnership with the German Ministry of Defence and the German Aerospace Center, Airbus carried out the first successful in-flight launch of a drone from the A400M, as part of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. The launch system was developed in just six months.
