New artificial intelligence (AI) cameras are being deployed on roads in the UK to identify drunk drivers in real-time.
Developed by the company Acusensus, these cameras detect signs of impaired driving, such as swerving, sudden braking, or erratic speeds, and immediately alert nearby police officers. Once flagged, authorities can carry out further testing on-site.
Already installed in areas like Staffordshire, Greater Manchester, Devon, and Cornwall, the cameras are part of the Vision Zero South West initiative, which aims to reduce alcohol- and drug-related road accidents.
This technology not only complements police work but also enhances road safety. Unlike automatic systems that apply penalties directly, AI works as a support tool, identifying suspicious behaviors for investigation. Geoff Collins from Acusensus emphasizes that the main goal is to save lives by acting preventively before an accident happens. He also highlights the importance of balancing safety and privacy to ensure the responsible use of technology.
In addition to the success of these cameras in trials, such as recording thousands of infractions related to cellphone use and seatbelt violations, similar advancements are being made in the automotive industry. Scientists are using AI to analyze car designs and aerodynamics data, aiming to develop more efficient and sustainable vehicles, further contributing to safety and innovation in transportation.
