The mine, identified as a YARM (high-explosive anchor river mine), was strategically placed by fighters from the 123rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade of Mykolaiv, who used a drone for its placement. This type of mine is known for its effectiveness in combating enemy landing vehicles and is used in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water.
The boat, which was carrying seven paratroopers, was traveling at high speed when it hit the mine and exploded. The force of the explosion was so intense that the troops were thrown into the sea. Some of the Russian military personnel survived the impact and managed to swim to the shore, where they were subsequently attacked by FPV drones.
YARM mines are Soviet high-explosive devices that feature a fuse that dissolves in water, allowing the mine to rise to the surface when activated. It is triggered by contact with the vessel, making it extremely dangerous for enemy naval units. The mine has a total mass of 13 kilograms, with 3 kilograms being the explosive charge.
According to experts, there is no way to directly neutralize a YARM mine; it can only be removed by dragging or by the detonation of an engineering charge. This incident underlines the ongoing dangers faced by naval forces in the Kherson region and highlights the increasing use of drones and autonomous technologies in the Ukrainian conflict.
