Elon Musk has been held responsible for the death of Genesis Giovanni Mendoza Martinez, 31, who died after an accident while driving his Tesla on “autopilot” mode.
The accident occurred on February 18, 2023, when the car, operating autonomously, collided with a fire truck. Mendoza had been on ‘autopilot’ for 12 minutes and was traveling at 71 mph.
His family filed a lawsuit against Musk and Tesla, claiming the feature is “poorly equipped” and puts lives at risk. They argue that Musk’s marketing of the autonomous driving system led Mendoza to trust the technology, believing it was safer than a human driver.
Tesla, in turn, defends that its cars are designed to be safe, and the accident may have been caused by errors and negligence on the driver’s part. However, the family, through their lawyer, criticizes the company for testing its technologies on public highways, endangering the safety of other drivers and first responders.
This is not the first crash involving the “autopilot” system. Between 2015 and 2022, 1,000 accidents were reported with the use of the technology, as well as more than 1,500 complaints related to unexpected braking.
The Mendoza family’s lawyer, Brett Schreiber, described the system as inadequate and accused Tesla of rushing the product’s launch without ensuring its safety.
