Mini is conducting a global recall of over 140,000 electric vehicles due to fire risk in the batteries.

In the United States, the recall affects 12,535 units of the Mini Cooper SE, models from 2020 to 2024. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the high-voltage batteries may not have been manufactured to the automaker’s specifications, which could lead to malfunctions and potential fires, even when the vehicles are not in use.

To address the issue, Mini will provide a free software update that includes a diagnostic function to detect battery failures and reduce the charge to less than 30%, if necessary.

BMW of North America stated that there have been no reports of injuries or accidents related to this issue so far. The automaker will begin notifying owners about the recall on October 7.
