The United States Army has awarded a US$98.7 million contract modification to manufacturer AM General to continue producing different versions of the Humvee (HMMWV) tactical vehicle.
The information comes from the Defence Blog website. With the new investment, the contract’s total value exceeds US$3.2 billion, with completion expected by August 28, 2027.
The agreement was awarded by the Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal in Michigan through a process involving only one bidder: AM General itself, which has manufactured the Humvee since the 1980s.
The new investment comes despite the US Army transformation initiative announced in 2025, which called for gradually ending the acquisition of ground vehicles considered surplus, including the Humvee and its successor, the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).
However, delays in the production of the latest JLTV version and the need to fulfill existing orders have helped keep the Humvee production line operating.
In addition to supplying the United States Armed Forces, AM General continues to manufacture Humvees for foreign military sales.
According to the company, a significant share of current demand comes from allied countries that continue to choose the vehicle because of its lower cost and the extensive operational experience accumulated over more than four decades of service.
