French company TR Equipement has unveiled a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 modified for military applications and equipped with an FN Evolys light machine gun. The demonstration took place at an air base in Belgium and highlighted the potential use of motorcycles in missions requiring mobility across difficult-to-access terrain.
The project was developed in collaboration with DZP Group, Belgian manufacturer FN Herstal and Nobel Security Defence. According to TR Equipement, the configuration is intended to address needs observed in recent conflicts, where lightweight two-wheeled vehicles have been employed for reconnaissance, equipment transport and rapid movement.
On the motorcycle presented, the Evolys was mounted on a support at the rear. The arrangement allows the rider to focus on driving while the second occupant operates the equipment. However, the company did not disclose details about possible modifications to the Himalayan’s frame, suspension or load capacity.
Installing additional equipment on a motorcycle requires special attention to weight distribution. Besides changing the center of gravity, the assembly may affect stability, braking and suspension behavior, particularly on uneven terrain. Therefore, a configuration of this type requires specific evaluations before any operational adoption.
According to TR Equipement, a study of the concept is underway in Belgium, while opportunities are also being assessed in the French market. So far, no orders or information about possible series production of the modified motorcycle have been announced.
Himalayan 450 is designed for off-road use
The choice of the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is related to the model’s adventure-oriented design. The motorcycle uses a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel, long-travel suspension and a structure developed for riding on both paved roads and unpaved routes.
The Sherpa 450 engine is a 452 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder unit with dual overhead camshafts and an output of nearly 40 hp. It is paired with a six-speed manual transmission and an assist-and-slipper clutch. The Himalayan also features ride-by-wire throttle, riding modes and a 17-liter fuel tank.
Machine gun stands out for its low weight
Manufactured by FN Herstal, the Evolys was designed to offer a lower weight than conventional light machine guns. The model is available in 5.56 x 45 mm and 7.62 x 51 mm calibers, both standardized by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The 5.56 mm version weighs approximately 5.5 kg, while the 7.62 mm configuration weighs around 6.2 kg. Its low weight helps explain why the equipment was chosen for a compact platform, where every additional kilogram can directly affect handling and carrying capacity.
Although motorcycles have been used by military forces throughout history, the proposal presented by TR Equipement updates the concept with a modern platform and lighter equipment. Even so, the modified Himalayan should be regarded as a technology demonstrator rather than a vehicle that has already been officially adopted by the French or Belgian defense forces.
