The pilot of an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet shot down over Iran in April reported encountering an unusual formation of Iranian drones moments before his aircraft went down.

According to sources cited by CNN, the pilot described the group as resembling a “jellyfish,” with larger drones moving together while smaller units flew beneath them, resembling tentacles.

According to the pilot’s account given during questioning after his rescue, the drones appeared to be interconnected and moved in a coordinated manner. One source described the pilot’s reaction to the sight as something “straight out of an alien movie.”

U.S. officials are now trying to determine exactly what he observed and whether the formation could indicate more advanced Iranian drone warfare capabilities.

It remains unclear whether the drones played a direct role in bringing down the fighter jet. However, one source said the pilot described the area as a true “minefield of drones,” raising the possibility that the formation was used to complicate navigation, hinder threat identification, or even assist Iranian air defense systems.

The F-15E was shot down during clashes between the United States and Iran. The pilot was rescued just hours after ejecting, but the weapons systems officer accompanying him remained hidden for more than a day in the Zagros Mountains before being extracted during a U.S. special operations mission involving special operations forces and support from the CIA.

According to CNN, intelligence analysts are still debating how to interpret the pilot’s account, including whether the concussion he suffered during the crash may have affected his perception of the events.

Even so, the incident is fueling concerns about Iran’s potential advances in drone technology and swarm warfare capabilities.
