Belgium has confirmed that it will strengthen its military support for Ukraine with the delivery of seven F-16 fighter jets by the end of 2026.

The announcement was made by Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken during preparations for a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. According to him, some of the aircraft will be intended for operational use, while others will serve as a source of spare parts.

Of the total announced, three F-16s are expected to be incorporated directly into Ukrainian Air Force operations, while four will be used for maintenance and logistical support. The minister also emphasized that the model has proven effective in combating Shahed-type drones and cruise missiles used by Russia.

In addition to this immediate delivery, Belgium maintains a broader plan for the gradual transfer of aircraft to Ukraine, scheduled for completion in 2029. The timetable depends on the arrival of the new F-35A fighter jets, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, which will replace part of Belgium’s F-16 fleet.

Projections indicate new shipments in the coming years, with five aircraft planned for 2027, 14 in 2028 and another 27 in 2029. However, Belgian authorities say the deadlines may be adjusted according to the operational needs of the Air Force and the country’s commitments within NATO, especially amid previous delays in replacing the fleet.
