The new main battle tank developed in partnership between Italy and Germany will be officially presented to the public during Eurosatory 2026, one of the world’s largest defense exhibitions.

Named IMBT, the armored vehicle is part of the modernization plan for Italy’s land forces and was designed to replace the veteran Ariete tanks, which have been in service for more than three decades.

The project is being led by Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles (LRMV), the strategic association created by Italy’s Leonardo and Germany’s Rheinmetall. The initiative is part of a broad renewal program for Italy’s armored fleet, which also includes combat vehicles from the Lynx family. The goal is to equip the Italian Armed Forces with platforms adapted to the demands of modern conflicts, marked by the growing use of drones, guided missiles and advanced surveillance systems.

The IMBT prototype comes equipped with technologies aimed at countering modern threats observed in recent conflicts. Highlights include the StrikeShield active protection system, capable of intercepting anti-tank missiles and rockets, as well as the ROSY system, which creates smoke screens to hinder target acquisition by enemy sensors. The vehicle also incorporates the Blaze 30 remote weapon station, armed with a 30 mm cannon to engage drones, troops and light vehicles.

The tank’s presentation at Europe’s leading land defense exhibition highlights LRMV’s strategy of pursuing opportunities beyond the Italian market. With increased military investment in several European countries, driven by changes in the continent’s security landscape, the new armored vehicle emerges as one of the bets to meet future demands for combat fleet renewal.
