The Royal Navy has announced that the lightweight multi-role Martlet missile has reached full operational capability aboard Wildcat helicopters, significantly expanding the aircraft’s combat capabilities in maritime and air defence missions.

The milestone follows a series of tests conducted to expand the weapon’s operational limits.

Initially cleared for launches only above 500 feet in altitude, the Martlet can now be used in flights as low as 50 feet above the ground or sea surface.

This new capability allows helicopters to operate below adverse weather conditions and increases precision against small and medium-sized maritime threats, including fast attack craft.

In addition to its role against naval targets, the missile has also demonstrated effectiveness against aerial threats such as drones and helicopters. According to the Royal Navy, the system turns the Wildcat into a multi-role attack platform, capable of operating in different combat scenarios with greater flexibility and precision.

The Martlet has already been used in operations in the Middle East, where Wildcat helicopters take part in defensive missions to protect British and allied interests in the region.

Developed by Thales, the weapon is based on the Starstreak missile and has been adapted for air-to-surface and air-to-air missions, consolidating its position as one of the main weapons in the British fleet for modern maritime operations.
