The United States Navy conducted a military exercise in the Arctic focused on the use of unmanned systems and autonomous technologies in maritime operations.

The activity took place in Ramsund, Norway, between May 4 and May 24, bringing together American and Norwegian forces in training focused on maritime defense and explosive ordnance disposal.

During the exercise, expeditionary forces from Task Forces 66 and 68 tested capabilities such as naval mine countermeasures, protection of underwater infrastructure, and maritime environment monitoring. The training leveraged Norway’s experience in operations in the High North, a region known for severe weather conditions and the challenges posed to autonomous systems.

Among the equipment used were the autonomous vessel Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft and the unmanned surface vehicle Lightfish. The platforms were used in maritime surveillance and reconnaissance missions in complex areas such as the Norwegian fjords, helping validate the performance of these technologies in extreme operational scenarios.

In addition to maritime drone operations, specialized teams also worked on removing explosive remnants from the two World Wars in Scandinavian waters. According to U.S. and Norwegian military authorities, the lessons learned during the exercise are expected to influence future military operations in the Arctic and strengthen maritime security in the region.
