A large crater opened on the Long Island Expressway in New York and almost completely swallowed a car on Thursday afternoon (14), causing traffic jams and lane closures on one of the region’s main highways.
According to Suffolk County police, the sinkhole appeared shortly after 1 p.m. local time on the westbound section of the highway near Exit 49, in Melville, Long Island. The crater was about 10 feet wide and more than 6 feet deep.
A vehicle partially fell into the hole. Images released by local broadcasters show the front of the car nearly suspended inside the crater, prevented from sinking completely only by the bumper caught on the edge of the asphalt. No one was injured.
Authorities closed the right and center lanes while emergency crews began repairs to the pavement. Traffic remained heavy during rush hour, and drivers were advised to seek alternative routes.
According to Fox 5 New York, investigators believe the crater may have been caused by work related to a municipal sewage project being carried out by a contracted company in the area.
