An NBC News reporter helped save the life of a teenager after a serious crash on a highway in Maryland, United States.
According to The New York Post, journalist Tom Costello was driving on Interstate 495 when a car sped past him before losing control and crashing into a concrete barrier.
Costello said he saw the vehicle roll over and “explode into pieces” in the middle of the road. After stopping to help, he immediately called emergency services and ran toward the destroyed car believing he would find a lifeless body.
Instead, he found a 17-year-old teenager still conscious inside the vehicle. The young man, in shock, repeatedly said that “everything hurt,” while flames began appearing underneath the car.
Fearing he might worsen possible injuries, Costello hesitated to move the driver by himself and started asking for help from other motorists passing on the highway. An orthopedic surgeon and a nurse eventually stopped at the scene and helped the journalist pull the teenager from the vehicle.
The three carried the young man away from the roadway moments before the car became completely engulfed in flames and exploded. Montgomery County authorities confirmed that the teenager survived the crash.
After the rescue, Costello said he was still shocked by what he had witnessed. “This was a 17-year-old kid, probably hadn’t been driving that long, 160 kilometers per hour, he should be dead. I honestly can’t believe he’s alive,” the journalist said.
