A replica of KITT, the famous intelligent car from the TV series Knight Rider, received a speeding ticket in New York despite having been parked for years inside a museum in Illinois.

The vehicle is part of the collection at the Volo Museum, located near Chicago. According to the museum, the notice sent by the New York City Department of Finance accused the car of traveling at 58 km/h in a school zone where the speed limit was 40 km/h, in the Brooklyn borough, on April 22. The fine was US$50.

The problem is that the car, a replica of a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, has not left the exhibition for years. The museum said the camera system likely confused the decorative “Knight” plate used on the show car with a real registration linked to the museum.

In a social media post, the museum joked about the situation. “You can’t make this stuff up. Our KITT hasn’t moved in years,” the institution wrote on its official Facebook page, also joking that actor David Hasselhoff “should pay the US$50.”

Despite the resemblance, the vehicle is not one of the original cars used in the series aired in the 1980s. The replica was built in 1991 by Mark Scricani using plans inspired by the original KITT model.

The museum said it has filed a formal request to contest the violation, while New York authorities said they are investigating the case.
