The British Royal Navy will deploy the destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East, where the Type 45-class warship will be pre-positioned ahead of a possible multinational mission aimed at protecting international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, according to information from the UK Defence Journal.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence confirmed the deployment of the ship. According to the statement, HMS Dragon will be sent to the region as part of preventive planning to ensure that the United Kingdom is prepared to participate in a future multinational coalition jointly led by the British and the French. The objective would be to secure navigation through the strait as soon as conditions allow the operation to proceed.

The destroyer will be transferred from the Eastern Mediterranean, where it had been operating in the defense of British bases located in Cyprus. With the change, the vessel will be able to immediately participate in any defensive operation that may be launched. The Ministry of Defence also emphasized that the proposed mission would be “strictly defensive and independent” in nature.

HMS Dragon is the fourth of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 destroyers. Launched in 2008 and officially commissioned in 2012, the ship was designed primarily for area air defense. Equipped with advanced radar systems and Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles, the destroyer can engage targets more than 100 kilometers away. The vessel also features naval guns, short-range defense systems, and the capability to operate Wildcat or Merlin helicopters in combat and anti-submarine warfare missions.
