Serbia has begun operating the Chinese-made CM-400 supersonic missile integrated into its modernized MiG-29 fighter jets.
The news emerged after the release of an image showing a Serbian Air Force aircraft equipped with two of these weapons under its wings. Until now, the missile had only been known to be in service with Pakistan, which means this newly revealed capability places the Balkan country in an unusual position in Europe in terms of range and aerial strike power.
Developed by the “China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation” (CASIC), the CM-400 was introduced in 2012 and is primarily designed for export. The weapon measures about 5.2 meters in length, weighs approximately 907 kg and can carry different types of warheads, including explosive or armor-piercing. According to the manufacturer, it can reach speeds of up to Mach 4.5 in the final phase of flight, combining high speed with the ability to strike targets at long distances.
The missile can be used against several types of targets. Although it is often described as an anti-ship weapon — sometimes nicknamed a “carrier killer” — it can also function as an anti-radiation missile or strike land targets. The system uses inertial navigation with satellite correction and specific sensors for the final attack phase, allowing it to hit targets with a high degree of precision.
For Serbia, the introduction of the CM-400 represents a relatively fast way to expand its long-range precision strike capability. The weapon can also be integrated into non-Chinese aircraft thanks to an independent fire-control system that eliminates the need for complex modifications to the aircraft. The adoption of the missile also reflects the diversification of the country’s military procurement, as Serbia in recent years has sought equipment both from the West and from partners such as China and Israel.

As we reported yesterday, Serbian Air Force showcased, for the first time, that they are in possession of Chinese made CM-400 supersonic air-ground missiles, with a reported range of up to 400 km.
This makes Serbia the second foreign customer, after Pakistan.
