New AI-based technology promises to expand the A-29‘s ability to detect, track and neutralize unmanned aerial systems with greater precision and lower operational costs.

Embraer has announced a strategic partnership with the U.S.-based company Valkyrie Aero to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into the counter–unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) capabilities of the A-29 Super Tucano. The initiative will use the Gunslinger system, developed by Valkyrie, to enhance the aircraft’s efficiency in drone neutralization missions on the battlefield.

According to the companies, the integration of the new technology will allow the A-29 to make tactical decisions in real time during operations against unmanned threats. The Gunslinger system uses AI algorithms to support the detection, tracking and engagement of drones, increasing the accuracy of operational responses.

The solution was designed to keep pace with the rapid evolution of threats posed by unmanned aerial vehicles, offering a scalable architecture that can be updated as new challenges emerge on the battlefield.

According to the companies, the system also complements the sensors already installed on the A-29, which have a proven track record in real-world operations. The combination of onboard sensors and AI is intended to significantly improve the pilot’s situational awareness and accelerate the decision-making process during missions.

Response to the growing drone threat

In recent years, military forces around the world have heavily invested in solutions to counter the increasing use of drones in armed conflicts. In many cases, advanced platforms — such as frontline fighter jets — are used to intercept unmanned vehicles, which can generate high operational costs per mission.

In this context, the A-29 Super Tucano emerges as a more economical alternative. Equipped with the Gunslinger system, the aircraft will be able to perform C-UAS missions at significantly lower costs while maintaining high operational effectiveness.

The Super Tucano combines long flight endurance, high maneuverability and an advanced cockpit that facilitates operations in complex environments. In addition, the aircraft can fly at speeds compatible with one-way attack drones, creating a stable platform for the use of weapons such as guided rockets, machine guns and other engagement systems.

A combat-proven platform

According to Marcio Monteiro, Vice President of Market Intelligence at Embraer Defense & Security, the partnership reinforces the potential of the A-29 as one of the most effective platforms for light attack and counter-drone missions.

“We are proud to announce this partnership with Valkyrie Aero to further enhance the C-UAS capabilities of the A-29. With more than 60,000 combat flight hours, the Super Tucano is currently one of the best platforms in the world for light attack missions and is ideal for manned operations against drones,” Monteiro said.

Chris Turner, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Valkyrie Aero, highlighted that the development of the Gunslinger system was inspired by real operational needs faced by military forces.

“Valkyrie Aero is excited about this partnership with Embraer to bring Gunslinger to the A-29 platform for customers around the world. The system originates from the immediate needs of frontline warfighters — professionals the company trains and interacts with daily,” Turner explained.

With this new technological integration, the A-29 Super Tucano will be able to further expand its role in low-intensity air defense and counter-drone missions, one of the most pressing challenges in modern conflicts.
