Denmark has announced a significant increase in funding for the country’s defense sector in order to reach NATO’s target of 3.5% of GDP.

According to the Ukrainian portal Militarnyi, the new plans would bring Denmark closer to achieving the NATO target five years ahead of the Alliance’s previous timelines.

The economic plan foresees an additional €34.2 billion to be allocated throughout the entire implementation period of the program. These funds will be used for large-scale rearmament and to strengthen Denmark’s military presence within NATO’s collective security framework.

One of the key points of the new strategy is significantly strengthening support for Ukraine. In particular, in 2026 the government proposes increasing funding for Ukraine by around €509 million to meet immediate defense needs.

According to the schedule, annual expenditures will gradually increase from an additional €2.87 billion in 2027 to more than €6 billion annually by the end of the decade. This funding will complement the resources already reserved under the previous defense agreement established in 2023.
