China has unveiled what may be its largest modern naval gun to date, installed on a test ship of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

With a 155 mm caliber, the new weapon surpasses the current 130 mm systems in operation and could significantly enhance the fleet’s firepower, particularly in support of amphibious operations and in engaging naval and aerial targets.

Released images show the equipment mounted on a Type 910 vessel at the Liaoning shipyard in Dalian. Preliminary information indicates that the system weighs around 21.8 tons and is capable of firing guided munitions.

The project is reportedly linked to the state-owned group NORINCO, known for producing large-caliber land-based howitzers, suggesting an adaptation of already established technologies for the naval environment.

The development comes amid the strengthening of China’s amphibious capabilities, which include new ships such as the Type 076 Sichuan and the expansion of the Type 075 fleet. Although missiles continue to dominate modern naval warfare, a long-range gun with advanced munitions could offer a more flexible and cost-effective alternative in certain scenarios, as well as complement other projects, such as Chinese studies on electromagnetic guns.
