In 2026, the Carabinieri celebrate 75 years of partnership with Alfa Romeo, which supplies patrol vehicles to Italy’s elite police force.

The partnership began in 1951, when the Matta (1900 M), the first and only off-road vehicle produced by Alfa Romeo, entered service. However, it was only in 1963 that cooperation between Alfa Romeo and the Carabinieri became closer with the arrival of the Giulia, which remained in service until 1968.

The Giulia was deployed in different versions and initially featured the traditional green color, later replaced in the 1970s by the current blue-and-white livery, while the Gazzelle was used by the Nucleo Radiomobile, the unit’s rapid-response division.

With the Alfetta, the double roof beacon was introduced to provide greater visibility compared to its predecessors, which had a single central light. This was followed by the Alfa Romeo 75 and, alongside it, the brand’s flagship model at the time, the Alfa Romeo 90.

In 1990 came the Alfa Romeo 155, the first Alfa with front-wheel drive in the history of the Carabinieri. It was followed by iconic models such as the 156 and 159, which featured special equipment, including bulletproof protection.

In 2010, the Carabinieri vehicle fleet gained the Giulietta, and in 2016 Alfa Romeo returned to rear-wheel drive—mirrored by the police force, which added the new Giulia to its lineup, including the Quadrifoglio version.

The latest Alfa Romeo to join the Carabinieri fleet was the Tonale SUV. Today, many of these vehicles are on display at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, in the “Alfa Romeo in Uniform” section, created in partnership with the Carabinieri and inaugurated in June 2020.

“We are deeply proud of this anniversary, which demonstrates a renewed commitment to putting the best of our technology and our passion at the service of those who protect this country every day,” said Santo Ficili, CEO of Alfa Romeo.
