Russian-made Mi-28NE attack helicopters appeared at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran, the capital of Iran, according to footage shared on social media.
According to a report from the Defence Blog website, videos shared online in January of this year also showed the Russian Mi-28NE helicopters flying over Tehran in apparent flight tests of the aircraft.
The helicopters feature a unique digital camouflage paint job. As can be seen from the images, the aircraft is equipped with main rotor blades from the Mi-28NM modification and a new type of dust protection system, upgrades aimed at improving performance in harsh environments.
Iran has not officially announced a contract for the purchase of Mi-28NE attack helicopters. The exact number purchased has also not been disclosed. However, it is believed that up to six Mi-28NE helicopters have been delivered to Iran so far.
Still, the transfer of Mi-28NE helicopters to Iran marks an additional expansion of defense cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.
The Mi-28NE is the export version of Russia’s Mi-28 attack helicopter, designed for anti-weapon and close air support missions. It is equipped with a 30mm cannon, guided and unguided rockets, and anti-tank missiles.
The addition of Mi-28NM rotor blades and upgraded filtration systems suggests that the helicopters delivered to Iran incorporate elements of the latest Russian configuration.
