Toyota announced that an electric version of the Highlander SUV will arrive for the 2027 model year, featuring a futuristic exterior and a technology-filled interior.
Built on a modified version of Toyota’s TNGA-K platform, the 2027 Highlander, marking the fifth generation of the three-row vehicle first launched in 2001, will come in two trims: XLE and Limited.
The XLE models offer front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) and a standard 77 kWh battery. The Limited, however, comes standard with all-wheel drive and a larger battery.
The XLE FWD will be equipped with a single electric motor that produces 221 hp and a range of 460 km. The XLE AWD has 338 hp but a slightly shorter range of 434 km. An upgrade to a 96 kWh battery is available, giving the XLE AWD and Limited up to 515 km of range.

Both versions come with a factory-installed North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. The Highlander EV also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, which can power external devices or serve as a backup power source in emergency situations.
Aesthetically, the electric Highlander has a very futuristic look, with bold lines, wide wheel arches, full-length LED daytime running lights, and semi-flush door handles. At the front, you’ll find the Toyota Hammerhead headlights and grille.

Inside, the 2027 Highlander receives a range of technologies, including a 14.0-inch central touchscreen that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel with a full-screen navigation option.
There are device charging ports in all three rows, an optional fixed panoramic glass roof, and even customizable ambient lighting with 64 color options. For the seats, SofTex synthetic leather is the standard material for all three rows. The front seats are also heated as standard, while ventilated front seats are available as an option.

In terms of safety, the Highlander EV comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (TSS 4.0) system, which includes: a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, a dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, and proactive steering assist.
Additionally, the 2027 Highlander has Toyota’s Star Safety System, a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, and a host of other technologies, including a smart key, rear seat reminder, and even hill-start assist.
The price for the electric Highlander, which will be assembled at Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky (USA) plant, has not yet been announced. However, considering that the current model starts at $47,070 for the standard gasoline version and $48,820 for the hybrid, it’s expected that the new electric SUV from Toyota will be priced around $50,000 when sales begin later this year.
