BMW has just revealed the first details about the future electric M3, which is expected to reach the market next year.

In 2024, the first photos of the electric M3 were released by the manufacturer. However, in addition to the car being heavily camouflaged in the images, further details about the vehicle remained a mystery. Until now.

According to the automaker, even though it is electric, the new M3 was developed to be a true “M” car. It features two electric motors per axle, meaning one motor for each wheel.

This means it can be driven in all-wheel-drive mode for city cruising, but you can favor the rear axle when you’re feeling a bit more daring.

The front axle can also be completely decoupled, allowing the rear motors to do all the work and increase range on highways.

Like some other performance EVs, the electric M3 comes with several preset driving modes. The modes allow for simulated gear shifts and an “exclusive soundscape that fits into the Neue Klasse.”

The entire system is managed by BMW’s Heart of Joy software, which can control the power and torque of each wheel in real time. This means torque distribution can be continuously adjusted to keep the tires at the limit of grip, according to BMW.

For the company, one of the priorities in developing the electric M3 was fitting a battery pack suitable for track use. To achieve this, BMW began by adapting the cell chemistry and cooling system for higher electrical currents.

As a result, the battery in the M3 EV has higher peak output and charging power compared to the standard EV 3 series. BMW has not yet provided the exact battery capacity, but stated that it exceeds 100 kWh.

The manufacturer is expected to release even more details about the electric M3 by the end of 2026, including additional specifications and pricing information. While the launch date has not yet been defined, BMW said the M3 EV will arrive next year.
