Shield AI, an American artificial intelligence company, has started wind tunnel testing for its X-Bat fighter drone, according to Defence Blog.

In the announcement, the company said the tests aim to accelerate design refinement and reduce development risk as the aircraft moves toward flight demonstrations.

Additionally, the test campaign is part of an effort to validate aerodynamic performance and ensure safety parameters for the aircraft fuselage, according to Shield AI.

“To move fast, you have to test fast. That’s why the X-Bat is already undergoing wind tunnel tests, reducing risk and improving each design iteration for greater safety and efficiency in the air,” the company said in a statement.

The X-Bat is being developed as a fully autonomous combat jet capable of operating without a human pilot and is intended to lead a networked formation of unmanned systems, conducting air-to-air and air-to-surface missions.

With a wingspan of 11.8 meters, the platform is described by the company as a long-range, high-endurance system, with a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles and a service ceiling above 50,000 feet.

The X-Bat combines vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), has an electronic warfare package, and is designed for expeditionary deployments. The company stated that the aircraft does not require a runway and can be launched or recovered from ships, remote islands, or improvised forward operating sites.

Meanwhile, its autonomous system is controlled by Hivemind, Shield AI’s proprietary AI pilot software, which has already demonstrated the ability to autonomously operate complex aircraft, including the F-16 fighter jet.

Wind tunnel testing marks the first public milestone in the aircraft’s development and signals the platform’s transition from conceptual design to physical validation. “Autonomy for the world. The greatest victory requires no war,” Shield AI added in its statement.
