The United States has reinforced that Turkey can only return to the F-35 fighter program if it abandons the Russian S-400 air defense system, acquired in 2019.

According to US Ambassador Tom Barrack, Washington has maintained the same position for years, stating that the Russian equipment is incompatible with NATO standards and risks sensitive information.

Barrack said the two countries are still negotiating a solution and indicated that Turkey is close to abandoning the S-400, which could happen within four to six months. The dispute led to Ankara’s exclusion from the F-35 program and the imposition of sanctions preventing Turkish companies from acquiring US military equipment.

If the impasse is resolved, Turkey could resume participation in the production and purchase of F-35 fighters, enhancing its Air Force capabilities and reopening one of the main military cooperation avenues between the two NATO allies.
