The South Korean Navy has launched four new fast attack craft of the Chamsuri PKMR class, marking the beginning of the second phase of the PKX-B program.

The units Chamsuri-231, 232, 233 and 235 were unveiled during a ceremony held at the HJ Shipbuilding & Construction shipyard in Busan, and will strengthen coastal surveillance and security along the Northern Limit Line, a strategic area near North Korean territory.

With a length of 44 meters and a top speed of 40 knots, the new PKMRs represent a significant technological advancement compared to the older Chamsuri models. They received more powerful armaments, such as a 76 mm cannon, 12.7 mm machine guns, and 130 mm guided rockets, in addition to improved radar, electronic warfare, electro-optical tracking systems, and an upgraded soft-kill system, enhancing response capability and survivability in high-threat environments.

In total, the Batch II program foresees the delivery of 18 vessels to fully replace the PKM fleet. The first four units will be delivered between August and November 2026, after undergoing sea trials and operational integration.

The South Korean Navy expects the new generation of patrol craft to strengthen maritime defense and expand rapid-response capabilities in sensitive zones.
