To test the impressive durability of its new luxury SUV, the Yangwang U8L, BYD decided to drop a two-ton tree on top of the vehicle.

The test was carried out to demonstrate the vehicle’s remarkable strength and involved a massive two-ton palm tree, which was dropped onto the roof of the SUV.

As a result, the Yangwang U8L was left practically unscathed. In addition to simply proving the SUV’s durability, the test was also meant to show how it can withstand natural disasters, including the tropical storms that frequently hit China and cause numerous trees to fall.

The Yangwang U8L has been described as a “tank-like vehicle” capable of performing versatile maneuvers around its own axis. It is also able to float on water for up to 30 minutes.

The new Yangwang family SUV from BYD operates on an EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) system, consisting of four electric motors and a 2.0 turbo gasoline engine that functions as a generator.

With 1,180 hp, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. In electric mode, the vehicle has a range of about 200 km. With the generator running, the combined range increases to approximately 1,160 km.

In terms of dimensions, it measures 5,400 mm in length, 2,049 mm in width and 1,921 mm in height, making it larger than traditional luxury SUVs. Its starting price is around ¥1.28 million (approximately USD 181,000).
