The UK Ministry of Defence has decided to cancel the conversion of the HMS Iron Duke after concluding that the project no longer offered good value for money.
A detailed analysis of timelines, costs, and the vessel’s remaining service life showed that the investment was not justified.
The proposal called for installing a Type 2087 towed sonar taken from a decommissioned Type 23 frigate. However, the time the HMS Iron Duke would spend out of service and the few remaining years of operational life reduced the viability of the initiative, according to Minister Luke Pollard.
Given operational priorities and the need to optimize resources, the government determined that the benefits of modernization would not outweigh the additional cost. As a result, the funds allocated to the project were redirected to other areas considered more effective.
