The HMS Prince of Wales has reached full operational capability and is officially under the command of NATO, marking the first time a European carrier strike group equipped with fifth-generation jets has been integrated into the alliance.
Onboard the ship, which operates near Naples, British and Italian authorities emphasized that this milestone reinforces the strategic priority given to collective defense, with the UK government calling this a significant step forward for European security.
According to the UK Ministry of Defense, the group now provides NATO with a full force of F-35B fighter jets, airborne surveillance, and support ships, enhancing the alliance’s readiness and response capability. The government also highlighted the cooperation with Italy, particularly in the development of next-generation aircraft and joint F-35 operations, noting that British jets have already surpassed 1,000 sorties this year.
After a long mission in the Indo-Pacific, the aircraft carrier is now integrating into the Neptune Strike exercise, which combines naval, amphibious, and anti-submarine operations in the Mediterranean. The ship also sets records, including the largest number of British fifth-generation fighters ever deployed and over 50 unmanned logistics flights.
The group will continue making stops at ports in Southern Europe while preparing for new NATO tasks during the winter period.
