An unidentified drone that was seen flying over Estonian airspace was shot down by NATO forces, according to the UK Defence Journal.

The incident occurred on October 17, when NATO forces stationed near Reedo Field, a military base in southern Estonia hosting U.S. forces less than 48 kilometers from the Russian border, identified and shot down the mysterious drone.

The Estonian Defence Forces (EDF) confirmed that the object was detected near the 2nd Infantry Brigade base around 4:30 PM and was shot down using an anti-drone rifle.

“Allies detected drones flying near the 2nd Infantry Brigade military base at 4:30 PM on October 17, one of which was shot down with an anti-drone rifle,” said Liis Vaksman, EDF spokesperson.

The device fell on Estonian territory; however, searches conducted by the EDF and the Police and Border Guard were unable to locate the wreckage. Authorities have also not confirmed the origin of the drone.

This was described as one of the most serious violations of Estonian airspace since the intrusion of three MiG-31 drones in September. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna warned that Estonia will not tolerate further incursions.

“The message must be clear: future violations will be punished, including, if necessary, the interception and shooting down of intruding aircraft,” he said.
