The Philippines are in negotiations with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to acquire new KF-21 Boramae fighter jets, following the model’s presentation at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition 2025.
The 4.5th generation aircraft, designed to compete with Chinese J-10 and FC-31 fighters, caught the attention of military and government officials in the region, including a Filipino delegation. KAI aims to position the KF-21 as an affordable and efficient option for countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
In addition to the KF-21, KAI also showcased the FA-50 light fighter, the KUH-1 Surion utility helicopter, and the Light Armed Helicopter at the exhibition. Since 2014, the company has supplied 12 FA-50 units to the Philippine Air Force, which recently ordered 12 more upgraded models. Experts highlight that South Korea’s proximity allows for quicker post-sale technical support, including technology transfer, making the products competitive against Western manufacturers.
The Filipino interest reinforces the deepening defense ties between Manila and Seoul. South Korea, aiming to become one of the world’s top four defense exporters, sees Southeast Asia as a strategic market and has expanded its military exports in response to the demand from mid-sized countries in the region.
