Switching from a combustion vehicle to an electric one will save you a lot on fuel, but to ensure you don’t miss the smell of gasoline, Kia is launching an unusual new product.

The initiative was presented by Astara Auto Finland, the company that imports Kia cars to Finland. The “gasoline scent,” which will perfume your car with this unmistakable aroma, will be offered as a gift to anyone who purchases the brand’s new electric vehicle, the EV4.

It may seem like a joke, but the real aim is to ease the transition from combustion cars to electric vehicles. “Giving up the combustion engine can feel like a huge step, just like giving up anything else familiar,” said Klaus Pohjala, Commercial Director of Astara Auto Finland.

“We wanted to add a touch of nostalgic fun to the transition with a car air freshener that smells like gasoline. Of course, this is a slightly bold campaign, but we also want to communicate that we understand this change is a very important decision for many.”

The fragrance was created by Finland’s only perfumer, Max Perttula. To create the scent, he said he mainly used aromas found in masculine fragrances but added a bit of jasmine for the finishing touch.

“It may seem absurd that jasmine, of all things, contains compounds with a scent that evokes gasoline,” explained Perttula.

According to him, the fragrance came to life after being metalized and sanded with compounds of amber, birch tar, and galbanum, and, surprisingly, it works.

Of course, this is more of a marketing move than anything else, but Kia‘s main goal is to add a touch of fun for new electric car drivers.
