Russia has proposed to India an enhanced version of the BMP-3 combat vehicle, with reinforced protection based on combat experiences, aimed at supporting the modernization of India’s mechanized infantry and gradually replacing older BMP-1 and BMP-2 vehicles.
The package includes modular reactive armor, anti-cumulus grids, self-sealing fuel tanks, a more powerful 600-horsepower engine, as well as updated transmission, suspension, and fire control systems, including a day-night multispectral sight.
The BMP-3 upgrade aims to fill immediate gaps in India’s combat capabilities, offering greater resistance to anti-tank missiles, artillery, and drone attacks. Although these vehicles have been scarcely observed in recent operations in Ukraine, the upgraded model represents a faster alternative to boost the readiness of mechanized forces, while the Indian Army continues to develop long-term solutions.
At the same time, India continues with the FICV project, aimed at creating a new generation of national, modular, AI-integrated infantry fighting vehicles, adapted to local operational conditions. Despite delays, FICV remains a strategic priority, symbolizing innovation and defense autonomy, while the upgraded BMP-3 provides an immediate response to the mechanized force’s needs.
