The new GJ-X stealth drone from China appears to have completed its first flight, marking a significant advance in the country’s unmanned aviation technology.

The aircraft, which follows a “flying wing” design with an “angled kite” shape, was spotted on video after being identified by satellites at the Malan airbase in Xinjiang. With an estimated wingspan of 42 meters, the GJ-X stands out among the world’s largest stealth drones, though experts rule out it exceeding the size of the U.S. B-21 Raider bomber.

The images show the drone with typical stealth aircraft features, such as split rudders at the tips and a likely configuration of two embedded engines, along with a special paint coating on the underside that helps camouflage its shape in flight. This visual technique is used to make detection more difficult and confuse observers about the aircraft’s orientation and structure.

It is still unclear what role the GJ-X will play within the Chinese forces. Analysts suggest it could serve as a combat drone (UCAV), stealth bomber, or long-range reconnaissance aircraft, similar to the mysterious U.S. RQ-180.

The project is part of a series of accelerated developments in China’s manned and unmanned stealth aircraft, such as the J-36 and J-XDS models, further reinforcing the country’s rapid advancement in advanced military technologies.
