Germany has formalized the purchase of 20 new Eurofighter jets from the Tranche 5, in a contract valued at around $4.36 billion, signed on October 15, 2025.

The aircraft, which will replace part of the German Air Force Tornado fleet, will be produced by Airbus in Manching and delivered between 2031 and 2034. The agreement, approved days earlier by the Bundestag, reinforces the country’s commitment to NATO and the expansion of its air defense capabilities.

The new Eurofighters will be equipped with the ECRS Mk 1 AESA radar and the Saab Arexis electronic warfare system, raising the level of onboard technology. They are expected to adopt the Phase 4 Enhancement (P4E) configuration, which brings improvements in sensors, cockpit, and interoperability, allowing multiple simultaneous operations with reduced pilot workload. These updates are expected to ensure fleet operation until the 2060s, when the fighter will operate in network with the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), scheduled for 2040.

In parallel, Germany continues to develop the Eurofighter EK, a version focused on electronic warfare and enemy air defense suppression (SEAD). Fifteen existing units will be converted and NATO-certified by 2030, replacing the old Tornado ECR. The project, which includes the use of the AGM-88E AARGM missile and AI-based technologies, is expected to cost around $1.32 billion and be completed by 2033, consolidating the Eurofighter as a key component of German air defense for the coming decades.
