Yamaha has introduced a new and innovative technological system that promises to protect its customers against motorcycle theft, a growing problem worldwide.
To use the technology, users will not need to purchase any add-ons or subscriptions; all they will need is a smartphone and the Yamaha Power Tuner app.
“The basic technology that allows the ECU to be locked is our existing CCU (Communication Control Unit), which we have been using for several years,” explained Leon Oosterhof, Product Manager at Yamaha, in an interview with Motorcycle News.
“It’s a small black box behind the left side cover that controls communication between the ECU and the outside world. In this case, a smartphone through a Wi-Fi signal it sends… With the Yamaha Power Tuner app, you can communicate with the bike. All the customer needs to do is install the app.”
So, if your motorcycle is stolen, there’s no need to panic: just connect to the CCU through the app and apply an ECU lock by entering your password.
If the thieves also take your phone, you can link the system to multiple devices, so the motorcycle can be locked and unlocked by several users.
While the technology does not prevent the bike from being physically taken, it will certainly stop thieves from being able to start or ride it, which can make recovery easier.
In the United Kingdom, the system will come standard on the brand’s YZ250F, YZ450F, WR250F, and WR450F models. However, the brand has not yet provided further details regarding the technology’s availability in other countries.
