Russia plans to repair and modernize over 800 T-72 tanks to the T-72B3M standard over the next 10 years, according to the analytical project Frontelligence Insight.
The project analyzed the number of components ordered to reconstruct production plans for the repair and modernization of T-72 tanks, as well as for the repair and production of Terminator-2 fire support vehicles.
Data obtained from internal documents of Uralvagonzavod indicate that Russia plans to refurbish and upgrade 828 vehicles to the T-72B3M configuration by 2036, according to Frontelligence Insight.
Coincidentally, this number appears to match the remaining T-72 units stored and in tank factories, as revealed by Jompy, an OSINT analyst, on X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, older T-72A tanks, produced between 1979 and 1985, were reportedly also sent to Uralvagonzavod for refurbishment.
As with the T-90M and T-90M2, peak activity is expected around 2028, while 498 T-72B3M units are expected to be repaired or upgraded between 2027 and 2029.
According to analysts, a full modernization of T-72A tanks to the T-72B3M standard will be a complex process, requiring a complete replacement of electronic components, a redesign of the chassis and loading system, as well as upgrades to the hull and turret armor.
Regarding the Terminator-2, also mentioned in the documents, production is expected to remain low. Between 2027 and 2036, only 86 of these vehicles are expected to be refurbished or produced.
