The Argentine Navy has announced that it is seeking to replace the inactive ARA Hércules and ARA Heroína frigates with new warships.

Possible candidates are already on the radar, including the Italian Maestrale class, the Danish Iver Huitfeldt class, and the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen class.

The Argentine Navy seeks to recover lost capabilities with the acquisition of these new vessels. The ARA Hércules and ARA Heroína frigates have been inactive for over ten years and are beyond repair.

Both frigates were officially retired after more than 40 years of service in the Argentine Navy.

The ARA Hércules joined the Argentine Navy in 1976 and was converted from a destroyer to a multi-role transport vessel in 2000.

The ARA Heroína is a destroyer of the MEKO 360 class, also known as the Almirante Brown class in the Argentine Navy. This vessel suffered a malfunction in a vital component, the slow shaft.

The Argentine government has not specified whether it intends to buy new or second-hand frigates.

In a recent interview, the head of the Argentine Navy, Admiral Carlos Allievi, stated that the country is also considering acquiring ships from Norway, particularly the Fridtjof Nansen class.

These ships offer similar capabilities to the Danish Iver Huitfeldt class, but are less armed, with only two vertical Mk 41 systems with 8 cells and only eight anti-ship missiles.
