Ukrainian troops have resorted to an innovative artificial intelligence technology to coordinate drone swarms in attacks against Russian positions.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the equipment is capable of operating autonomously, choosing the moment of attack without direct human intervention. This tactic has been in use for at least a year, establishing Ukraine as a pioneer in the military use of this technology.
The system, developed by the company Swarmer, allows the coordination of multiple drones on joint missions. Initially employed for mine installation, the software has since been used in offensives against soldiers, vehicles, and Russian infrastructure. Tests have already shown effectiveness with groups of up to 25 drones, and new experiments are expected to involve up to 100 units simultaneously.
Ukrainian military sources say the technology has already been used in over a hundred operations, usually with one reconnaissance drone and two attack drones armed with small bombs. While the operator defines the mission area, the drones decide the route, timing, and firing order, raising ethical debates about the role of artificial intelligence in life-and-death decisions on the battlefield.
