New Zealand has announced an investment of approximately $1.6 billion to modernize its armed forces, with a focus on replacing helicopters and transport aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).
The government has confirmed the purchase of five Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, which will replace the eight SH-2G(I) Seasprite currently in operation, acquired second-hand in 2015. The acquisition will be made through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement with the United States, accelerating the delivery process, expected to be approved in 2026.
In addition to the helicopters, the RNZAF will also renew its strategic transport fleet with two Airbus A321XLRs, which will enter service by 2027 replacing the old Boeing 757s. The new aircraft will have a capacity for 122 passengers and up to 9 tons of cargo, maintaining essential functions such as VIP transport, humanitarian missions, and support flights to stations in Antarctica. The 757s, in operation for over 30 years, had recurring reliability issues, reinforcing the urgent need for renewal.
The plan is part of the Defence Capability Plan (DCP), which foresees biennial reviews to adapt to an increasingly unstable international scenario. Future priorities include increasing offensive capacity, greater integration with allies, and the development of unmanned technologies, both aerial and naval. Modernization of communication systems and improvements to military living conditions are also planned, measures aimed at strengthening operational readiness and the attractiveness of a career in the armed forces.
